Reflections on Travel: Lessons from Quebec, New England, and Beyond

Writer: Sunny NaughtonSunny Naughton

Travel has always been more than just a change of scenery for me—it’s an opportunity for self-discovery, inspiration, and growth. I have traveled extensively for work, and in the next chapter, I am focused on more travel for pleasure. I have been to 47 states in the US, with just a few more to go to reach the goal of visiting all 50. I also hope to travel more internationally over time.

Over the years, I’ve explored places that have challenged my perspectives, enriched my understanding, and offered me moments of deep connection with both the world around me and myself. I especially loved the Mojave Desert out west. From the cobblestone streets of Quebec to the bustling energy of New York City and the relaxed coastal charm of New England, each journey has left an imprint on my life and choices I make with what I have learned.

Ways Travel Can Help You Learn and Grow

  • Experiencing Different Cultures – Exposure to new traditions, languages, and customs broadens your worldview. (Smith & Gordon, 2020, The Psychology of Cultural Adaptation)

  • Building Confidence – Navigating unfamiliar places helps develop independence and adaptability. (American Psychological Association, 2018)

  • Learning Through History – Visiting historical sites gives deeper insight into the past and how it shapes the present. (National Geographic, 2021)

  • Developing Patience and Flexibility – Travel rarely goes exactly as planned, which teaches problem-solving skills and resilience. (Harvard Business Review, 2019)

  • Appreciating Home More – Time away can help clarify what you value most about where you live. (Travel & Leisure, 2022)

  • Meeting New People – Engaging with locals and other travelers can create meaningful connections and new perspectives. (World Tourism Organization, 2021)

  • Sparking Creativity – Exposure to different landscapes, architecture, and lifestyles can inspire fresh ideas and perspectives. (Journal of Creativity Studies, 2020)

The Lessons Travel Leaves Behind

Each of these places has left me with something valuable—Quebec with its deep sense of history and culture, New England with its grounding presence, New York with its electric ambition, and San Francisco with its mix of energy and calm. Research shows that travel enhances creativity, improves problem-solving skills, and strengthens emotional resilience (American Psychological Association, 2020). More than just visiting new locations, travel challenges perspectives, fosters growth, and clarifies what truly feels like home.

Where have your travels taken you, and what lessons have you learned along the way?
